The Dollyrots
The Dollyrots
Kelly Ogden has always wanted to be a mermaid.

The bassist/vocalist for the Dollyrots clarifies: “Growing up in Florida, we were always at the beach, or swimming in a pool or a lake or a spring. I’ve just always felt at home in the water.”

Being suited to both land and sea has been a theme in Kelly’s life, and has been woven into the imagery and songwriting on the Dollyrots’ new album, Whiplash Splash. Being half human and half fish seems a fitting metaphor for the way the band now splits their time between downtown Los Angeles and coastal Florida, or how they manage to balance touring life on the road with parenthood at home.

Whiplash Splash is the Dollyrots' sixth studio LP, and their first since 2014’s Barefoot and Pregnant. And after touring with their rat Sniffy, their dog Quito, and their son River, it also marks the addition of their new daughter Daisy to their entourage.

“We only had three months to write, record, and finish the album between the launch of our PledgeMusic campaign and the birth of our daughter,” says guitarist Luis Cabezas. “Parenthood doesn’t afford us the time to overthink things anymore. We tracked the bulk of the record at our home studio and went with our first instincts when it came to the music and lyrics.”

The result is an album that’s focused, sharp, and completely fan-funded. During their 16-year career, the Dollyrots have released albums on labels like Blackheart and Lookout!, but have successfully crowdfunded their last few releases thanks to their loyal (and generous) fans. Whiplash Splash marks the band's follow-up to unlikely diy debuts in the Top 15 of Billboard’s Heatseeker’s Chart and the band’s fifth collaboration with longtime producer & friend John Fields, known for his work with All Time Low, Jimmy Eat World, Busted, and so many others.

The Dollyrots plan to tour in support of the album while River and Daisy are still portable in kid car seats, but their days of traveling in a crusty van and waking up hungover on random people’s floors are behind them.

“The album art shows a mermaid alone, isolated, and watching her city glow beneath bomb fire. The conflict between musician life & motherhood can be difficult to blend sometimes; there aren’t a lot of women I know who are living this same split lifestyle,” Kelly explains.

“But mermaids are also a symbol of transformation and growth. And that’s always something to be excited and a little scared of. But we don’t have time to be afraid anymore."
The Two Tens
The Two Tens
The duo known as The Two Tens have racked up a lot of accomplishments since the release of their first EP, Volume 1, including three additional EPs, the full-length LP Volume, and four US tours. Not to mention that the 12-song Volume album yielded seven (yes, seven) fully-realized videos, all made on DIY budgets funded solely by the band themselves, as was the production of the first album.

Made up of Adam Bones on guitar and vocals alongside co-conspirator Rikki Styxx on drums and backing vocals, the duo’s DIY pursuits were funded the old-fashioned way: hard work, playing local gigs and selling handmade custom merch. After releasing their four EPs digitally, the band spearheaded a very successful PledgeMusic campaign to release the full-length on CD, so impressing Man Della Records in the process that the label stepped up to release Volume on 12-inch clear vinyl.

Since then, The Two Tens have signed with Man Della Records for the release of their as-yet-untitled second album. They’ve already tracked three songs in Minneapolis with producer John Fields (Dollyrots, Andrew WK, Pink), including “Keeping Hope Alive,” the lead-off single which will be released in advance of the album on February 10, 2017. Meanwhile, they’re back home in Los Angeles finishing the album with the Volume team of producer Bruce Duff (also their manager, making him an Andrew Oldham-style control freak), engineer Paul Roessler (punk demigod/L.A. studio maven) and mastering engineer Jim Diamond (who is indeed the master of modern garage/punk from the Dirtbombs to the Sonics to the White Stripes).

The Two Tens new debut album VOLUME is out now on CD and digital formats via Ugly Sugar Records and on vinyl via Man Della Records.
JetLab
JetLab
Blasting up from the cityscape of Cincinnati, OH are JetLab, an American 4-piece band, fronted by songwriters Elle Crash and Nick Barrows, with drummer Dave Welsh and guitarist Brian Smith. Grounded in the tradition of groups with multiple singers and writers, JetLab offers a wild two-sided perspective that merges rock and soul with dance and electronica, wrapping heart-hitting bass in loops of keyboards with acoustic and electric guitar with just a ghostly hint of hip-hop. With the goal of luring even shoe-gaze types to surrender control of their feet and dance, they start with a old-school rock sound that's influenced by David Bowie, Pink Floyd and the Stones, mixed with the influence of Foster the People, The Cars, LCD Sound System, Big Audio Dynamite, Gang of Four and the Talking Heads

The band formed in 2013, based on a bet between Elle and Nick to see if they could create something that would marry the mix of rock and dance that would entice the Cincinnati scene to lose control and dance again.

Drawing from their long-term pedigree of acclaimed performances in Cincinnati and beyond, and their experience of collectively opening up for Heartless Bastards, Mates of State, Happy Chichester, Dressy Bessy, The Bound Stems, Shag and Jenny Lewis and more, Elle Crash (Lovely Crash, The Fairmount Girls) and Nick Barrows (4 Track Allstars, Eagle to Squirrel, Jack Burton Overdrive) convinced drummer Dave Welsh (Jack Burton Overdrive, FrogMan) to join them in the basement lab to experiment with the base sound. They've emerged with a self-titled debut album recorded, mixed, and mastered at Candyland with Mike Montgomery (Ampline)
