Anew to Wander
Anew to Wander
The band started as a duo at the University of Dayton under the name 'The Leap Years'. The group grew into a five piece set releasing two projects in a two year period. After the second release the band continued with just its original members. Now the band has rebranded with a new energy. 'Anew to Wander' continues to write meaningful, hopeful, and authentic lyrics backed by their original indie/alternative/folk sound.
Elk Creek
Elk Creek
“It is difficult, with a band that features harmonica so prominently, to not make comparisons to Blues Traveler or Neil Young – and, sure, there is some of that – but Elk Creek has managed to carve out a sound all their own that has a hint of latter-day hippie jam band balanced with a rich singer-songwriter tradition.” —Jim Nolan, WVXU

Elk Creek’s sound is rooted in the singer-songwriter style of artists like Neil Young, Ryan Adams, Avett Brothers, Band of Horses, and Iron And Wine. On top of that, rock and blues influences such as Blind Melon, Two Gallants, and Sonny Boy Williamson shine through.

Founding members Aaron Price, Jeremy Brown, and Brad Smith grew up together in Trenton, Ohio, but fell out of touch after moving away to attend different colleges. They had last played together in the band Hector, which practiced in a house on Elk Creek Road.

In their years apart, each continued to make music. In 2012, when the three reunited in Cincinnati, it was immediately clear that they needed to make music together again. They began sharing stories of life experiences, which became the foundations for new songs. Drummer Travis Estell and bassist Nick Whittenburg were added, and the group began to develop these song ideas into full arrangements. In 2015, Smith left the band and Whittenburg moved to lead guitar. Brian “BJ” McKinney (formerly of Sohio) joined the band, taking over on bass in addition to adding mandolin and keyboards on some songs.

The band’s debut EP, Greenfield Project, was recorded at Ultrasuede Studio in Cincinnati with engineer Brian Niesz (Heartless Bastards, Wussy). The EP was named one of 2014’s best local releases by CityBeat, and was positively reviewed by WVXU and Dayton Most Metro. Songs from the EP have been played on several local radio stations including WNKU, WUDR, and WRVG.

Elk Creek, an 8-song self-titled album, was released in 2016. The album is the first to feature Nick Whittenburg on lead guitar, new member Brian McKinney on bass, keys, organ, and mandolin, and special guest Krystal Peterson on vocals. Matt Hueneman recorded and produced the album at Audiogrotto in Newport, Kentucky, and also contributed organ and percussion.

Elk Creek has opened for artists such as Bobby Bare Jr., Ona, Caroline Rose, and Kalob Griffin Band, and was nominated for two 2015 Cincinnati Entertainment Awards in the Folk/Americana and New Artist categories. In 2015, the band performed at Cincinnati’s Fountain Square and at the MidPoint Music Festival.

Jack Burton Overdrive
Jack Burton Overdrive
Four piece acoustic power group from Cincy. Influenced by comics, pop culture, indie and prog rock.

Cincinnati, Ohio band Jack Burton Overdrive (JBO) formed in 2006 around the concept of playing unique arrangements of their favorite songs based around vocals and a simple concertina and ukulele core. Concertina player Nick Barrows (Jetlab) and rhythm ukulelist Jack Rininger honed their skills on their own vision of the Great American Songbook.

Four years later, JBO recorded a version of Mele Kalikimaka with producer Jay Reynolds (Asleep at the Wheel) for New Fidelity Studios’ charity album Christmas Sessions. With the addition of classically trained guitarist John Stork in 2011, JBO began to journey into writing originals and a sound was forming. The trio grabbed drummer Dave Welsh (JetLab, FrogMan) and a sonic union was formed synthesizing their divergent musical tastes and inspirations.

In the winter of 2014 Jack Burton Overdrive went into the studio with Ben Cochran at Soap Floats Recording. Pulling from their collective memory of the sounds and experiences from their youth in Clifton, Northside, Downtown and OTR, the resulting album Tarbel Street to be released later this year, strives to capture the late night freedom of wandering Cincinnati’s vibrant entertainment districts with a pocket full of singles, registering and following the different sounds emanating from the lively nightclubs and bars.

With no genre off limits, JBO pulled from many influences; REM, Ben Folds, Weird Al, Dire Straits, Nick Lowe, and They Might Be Giants to name a few. JBO prides itself on enjoying the performance and nuanced arrangement of every song. Unique storytelling, driving instrumentation, and off-the-wall lyrics gives JBO its own special sound. From Americana to Prog, JBO leaves no musical stone unturned.

JBO are:
Nick Barrows - Vocals, Concertina, Stylophone
Jack Rininger - Vocals, Ukulele, Mandolin, Guitar
John Stork - Vocals, Guitar
Dave Welsh - Drums, Vocals, Guitar

JetLab
JetLab
Blasting up from the cityscape of Cincinnati, OH are JetLab, an American 4-piece band, fronted by songwriters Elle Crash and Nick Barrows, with drummer Dave Welsh and guitarist Brian Smith. Grounded in the tradition of groups with multiple singers and writers, JetLab offers a wild two-sided perspective that merges rock and soul with dance and electronica, wrapping heart-hitting bass in loops of keyboards with acoustic and electric guitar with just a ghostly hint of hip-hop. With the goal of luring even shoe-gaze types to surrender control of their feet and dance, they start with a old-school rock sound that's influenced by David Bowie, Pink Floyd and the Stones, mixed with the influence of Foster the People, The Cars, LCD Sound System, Big Audio Dynamite, Gang of Four and the Talking Heads

The band formed in 2013, based on a bet between Elle and Nick to see if they could create something that would marry the mix of rock and dance that would entice the Cincinnati scene to lose control and dance again.

Drawing from their long-term pedigree of acclaimed performances in Cincinnati and beyond, and their experience of collectively opening up for Heartless Bastards, Mates of State, Happy Chichester, Dressy Bessy, The Bound Stems, Shag and Jenny Lewis and more, Elle Crash (Lovely Crash, The Fairmount Girls) and Nick Barrows (4 Track Allstars, Eagle to Squirrel, Jack Burton Overdrive) convinced drummer Dave Welsh (Jack Burton Overdrive, FrogMan) to join them in the basement lab to experiment with the base sound. They've emerged with a self-titled debut album recorded, mixed, and mastered at Candyland with Mike Montgomery (Ampline)

Dayton-based artist, PINEL, contributes to in-studio production, serving as a key part of MEGA PIXEL's sound.
Nick Kizirnis

The Matildas
The Matildas
The Matildas are currently in the studio recording their first album together. The latest collection of songs is penned by front woman Sarah Mann, whose unique voice is both soothing and powerful. A singer songwriter for nearly 15 years, she creates simple tales of love and wander with her ukulele and guitar. Rich in imagery and inspired by the seasons of farm and family, her melancholy ballads have their roots in hope. Her songs are elevated by the harmonious collaboration with Rachel Hodge, a formally educated opera singer and pianist who spends her days as a music teacher, teamed with husband Sam Hodge, whose ambient guitar swells and echoes to complement Mann's dreamy lyrics. Sam plays along side his brother, veteran punk bassist and producer Joe Hodge. Completing the group is musical encyclopedia and Massachusetts transplant Jennifer Holloman on percussion.

Recording and rehearsing in a historic drug store in the little town of Butler, KY, the group borrowed their name from the street Matilda where the store is located. Inspired by Bob Dylan’s electric folk and the blues that birthed rock-and-roll, this group of eclectic artists have created their own brand of Americana, one that reveals the artistic side of rural living and speaks of its nuances (a story they recently had the opportunity to share with NPR’s Weekend Edition).

The energetic five-piece is now booking their summer tour in the local radius of their Northern Kentucky home. Currently scheduled: Berea and Cynthiana’s Summer Concert Series, Comfest (Columbus, OH) and their hometown’s Woolfest, with more to be announced.

"Songwriting, for me, is a process of understanding the events of a day…the beauty in the mundane, the heartache and hope in the melancholy. One minute I'm writing jazz, and in the next breath... indie pop." She grew up on Karin Bergquist songs from local sweethearts Over the Rhine, but mostly listened to her father's jazz music. Emily is the lead vocalist/keyboardist with The Emily Parker Band.
Maurice Mattei
Maurice Mattei
