Sunbeam Colleen writes vulnerable lyrics-forward Anti-Folk in Ridgewood, Queens in the vein of Kimya Dawson, Jonathan Richman, and PS Elliot (and sometimes Bikini Kill). Her DIY debut album Goober is an ode to grieving the worst pain ever, but also having a debilitatingly horny crush on your bestie while cleaning bugs from your bathroom. Life contains multitudes. Colleen started recording in October 2023, months after the devastating double loss of her mom and dad. After returning to her native Ohio, biking through cornfields and graveyards, zoning out, going through all of her parents' possessions, and selling her childhood home, she realized life is short and she’d better get recording: “Dad was a huge music fan with thousands of records. Mom was where my sense of humor came from, but she struggled with addiction and mental health shit. They’d think this album was really cool and it makes me sad they don’t get to hear it.
She sought out Houston transplant and buddy Matt Wilhelm, to produce the album based on his experience at Sugar Hill Recording Studios. Colleen enlisted a roster of talented musician friends to flesh out her songs via the Bar Freda open mic (the freak forward open mic Sunbeam Colleen hosts in Ridgewood, Qns).
Goober has been gaining traction and the songs “Bugs in the Bathroom” + “Moon So Low” have been played on WFMU (the premiere indie radio station in the new york/new jersey area). On July 13th, Sunbeam Colleen performed and was interviewed for WFMU’s Anima Mundi with DJ Chinn.
